The weather here in St. Petersburg has been quite cool so far. In fact, to date I’d say I could count the number of days when the temperature has equaled or exceeded 70 degrees on one hand. So, 5 or less days.
Temperatures on most days have been in the 50’s or 60’s, on some days not even breaking 60 degrees. At night it’s been in the 50’s, sometimes even dropping into the 40’s and lower.
This is actually something I’d been expecting to see the last couple of years while we were staying here. This sort of weather is what I think of as traditional St. Petersburg summer conditions. After all, this city i located almost as far north as Anchorage, Alaska.
It has only been over the last 20 years or so that temperatures have been regularly rising to the levels we would typically see in my area of the U.S. (upper midwest) in the summer months. And during the last few summers prior to when we took up summer residency here, there had been some really unprecedentedly high temperatures here in the summer.
All that said, so far we are on track for a cooler, more traditional summer here, though we are expecting more warming over the coming weeks. As the forecast screenshot above indicates, we should be getting a couple of back-to-back 70-degree-plus days soon. Whether it will get up as high as 90 like it did for a couple of days last summer and the summer before remains as yet to be seen. Mind you, I won’t be disappointed if temperatures do not go that high, but if the past several summers are any indication, we’re likely to see at least a bit of that.
As the case may be, we’re so far enjoying this more traditional (weather-wise) St. Petersburg summer. I’ll try to write again soon about another news item we just became aware of yesterday: the traditional typical summertime hot water shut-off.
