Today St. Petersburg residents are due to see here the shortest number of nighttime hours in any 24 hour period of this year—tomorrow being the summer solstice. I decided to shoot a video late this night to give my readers a sense of what 11:30 P.M. looks like on the street this time of year. Thus the following video (apologies for the video quality at the beginning; I only realized partway through that my finger was covering the upper left corner of the lens).
It’s been pretty cool here the last few days by the way, which suits us just fine. At the time of the shooting of this video it was about 64 degrees.
The light sky seen on the northern horizon doesn’t completely disappear at this time of year but gradually shrinks to a smaller and smaller proportion until that portion starts to expand again after a short time. You can see why they call this period in St. Petersburg “white nights.”
Below are a couple of shots taken from our balcony a little later the same night at 2 and 3 A.M.
